8-Day Lemosho Route Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Tanzania
Arusha Hotel

Elevation: 1,400m (4,593ft)

Activities: Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), meet our representative, and transfer to your hotel in Arusha. Evening briefing with your lead guide, equipment check, and orientation session.

Accommodation: Comfortable hotel with dinner and breakfast included.

Preparation: Finalize packing, rent any additional gear needed, and meet your climbing team.

Day 2: Lemosho Gate to Mti Mkubwa Camp
2,650m | 5-6 hours trekking

Elevation Gain: 1,250m (4,101ft)

Climate Zone: Rainforest

Activities: Morning drive to Lemosho Gate (2-3 hours). Complete registration with park authorities. Begin trek through lush montane rainforest with ancient trees covered in moss. Spot black and white colobus monkeys, blue monkeys, and various bird species.

Terrain: Well-maintained trail through dense forest with gradual ascent.

Wildlife: Tropical birds, monkeys, and rich forest flora including orchids and ferns.

Day 3: Mti Mkubwa to Shira 1 Camp
3,610m | 6-7 hours trekking

Elevation Gain: 960m (3,150ft)

Climate Zone: Heath/Moorland

Activities: Exit the rainforest into heath and moorland zone. Spectacular views of Kibo Peak emerge. Cross several streams and see giant lobelias and groundsels. Afternoon acclimatization hike to higher elevation then return to camp.

Terrain: Steeper sections with rocky paths, crossing the Shira Ridge.

Acclimatization: "Climb high, sleep low" principle applied with afternoon hike.

Day 4: Shira 1 Camp to Barranco Camp
3,960m | 6-7 hours trekking

Elevation Gain: 350m (1,148ft) net gain

Climate Zone: Alpine Desert

Activities: Trek across the Shira Plateau, one of the world's highest plateaus. Ascend to Lava Tower (4,630m) for crucial acclimatization. Experience the "climb high, sleep low" strategy. Descend through spectacular Barranco Valley with views of the Breach Wall.

Terrain: Rocky trails with significant altitude variation for acclimatization.

Health: Important day for altitude adaptation with 670m ascent and 710m descent.

Day 5: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
4,035m | 4-5 hours trekking

Elevation Gain: 75m (246ft) net gain

Climate Zone: Alpine Desert

Activities: Conquer the famous Barranco Wall (not technical climbing but requires scrambling). Traverse through valleys and ridges with stunning views of the southern ice fields. Short hiking day to aid acclimatization. Afternoon rest and preparation for summit push.

Terrain: Scrambling up Barranco Wall, then gradual ascent through valleys.

Challenge: Barranco Wall provides exciting scrambling with spectacular photo opportunities.

Day 6: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
4,640m | 4-5 hours trekking

Elevation Gain: 605m (1,985ft)

Climate Zone: Alpine Desert to Arctic

Activities: Ascend to Barafu Camp, the base camp for your summit attempt. The terrain becomes more barren and lunar-like. Early dinner and rest before midnight summit start. Final equipment check and summit briefing with guides.

Terrain: Steep, rocky ascent with switchbacks to high camp.

Preparation: Hydrate well, organize summit gear, and try to rest before midnight departure.

Day 7: Summit Day - Barafu to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp
5,895m | 12-15 hours trekking

Elevation Gain: 1,255m (4,117ft) to summit

Elevation Loss: 2,795m (9,170ft) to Mweka

Climate Zone: Arctic Summit to Rainforest

Activities: Midnight start for summit attempt. Trek through the night with headlamps. Reach Stella Point (5,739m) at dawn for sunrise over Africa. Continue to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) - the highest point in Africa. Celebrate your achievement, take photos, then descend to Barafu for rest. Continue descent to Mweka Camp through multiple climate zones.

Challenge: Most physically demanding day with extreme altitude and long duration.

Reward: Standing on the Roof of Africa at Uhuru Peak!

Day 8: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate
1,640m | 3-4 hours trekking

Elevation Loss: 1,240m (4,068ft)

Climate Zone: Rainforest

Activities: Final descent through lush rainforest to Mweka Gate. Receive official summit certificates from park authorities. Celebration with your climbing team and porters. Transfer to hotel in Arusha for hot shower, celebration dinner, and well-deserved rest.

Terrain: Steep, slippery descent through rainforest on well-maintained trail.

Celebration: Traditional tipping ceremony for guides and porters, celebration dinner.
